What the game “Focus on the Fish: Greater or Less” is about

“Focus on the Fish: Greater or Less” is a number-based online game inspired by the cormorant story from “The Book About Birds, Part 1”, part of the LittleBookBirdAndWiseOwl project. In the book, the Little Book Bird and the Wise Owl meet cormorants – attentive and patient fishers who first observe and only then act with precision. This principle – attention without haste – became the foundation of the cormorant game series. In “Focus on the Fish: Greater or Less”, attention is combined with simple numerical thinking: the focus is not only on noticing a number, but on understanding its relation to a given reference – greater or less.

How the game works

From time to time, a new task appears on the playing field, showing a reference number and a comparison direction. Fish with different numbers then appear on the screen, and the correctness of the choice depends on whether the number matches the comparison condition. The game includes three “lives”, shown as small fish in the statistics panel on the right side of the playing field. The number of lives decreases if a fish with an incorrect number is tapped or if a correct option is missed.

Why the game “Focus on the Fish: Greater or Less” is useful

Although the game may seem simple, it trains an important level of thinking – comparing numbers and understanding that “greater” and “less” are not just separate words, but relationships between quantities. A sense of number gradually forms: a number is perceived not as a symbol, but as a position on a scale.

Cognitive flexibility is also supported, as the condition changes and the rule has to be adjusted each time. This helps train the ability to switch quickly, avoid confusion, and keep attention on the condition itself, rather than on a random number that looks appealing or appears more often.

“Focus on the Fish: Greater or Less” is the second game in the cormorant online game series. Unlike “Focus on the Fish: Find the Right Number”, which centres on holding one rule in mind, and “Focus on the Fish: Count and Stop”, which focuses on self-control and stopping at the right moment, this game places the main emphasis on number comparison. Each game in the series has its own focus, while sharing a common story.

From story to action. From action to play. From play to new adventures.
